Oil spills cause major damage to the aquatic species and environment.
The oil repellent mesh is a great invention to counter the oil spills &
stop them.Oil spills in oceans, seas and other water bodies are known to
destroy the water life and make permanent damage to the eco-system. These are
man-made catastrophes that affect the well-being of Nature and the environment.
Oil spills have become rampant in the past decade leading to suffocating death
of many species inside the water and have partially affected animals that
consume such water. As oil means power, most of the nations remain complacent
against taking strict actions against such accidents or intentional behaviour
by the companies.
Fortunately, The Ohio State University found a tiny solution for
this major problem i.e. creation of a mesh that can block & collect oil
while letting through water. The mesh is made of very affordable and available
things like stainless steel, silica, polymer and surfactant. Researchers have
used basic science to create the mesh. The stainless steel mesh is coated with
a layer of silica creating an uneven surface. Then the surface is coated with
surfactant and polymer to complete the mesh. The polymer will act as an oil
repellent; as it is coated finely to the steel there is no chance of oil to
escape it. Therefore, it becomes easy for the mesh to repel and catch the oil
from the surface of water.
The mesh is inspired by
observing Nature’s wonders such as lotus flower, shark skin and butterfly wings,
all of them having excellent repellent surfaces. This invention could lead to
provide a solution to the oil spills across the globe. Further, researchers are
looking to develop the concept to find new oil sources by using the mesh as
well. The testing with silica is also a part of the plan to create smudge free
